Unbound Spin (翻轉囚員) is a 12-minute Taiwanese short film directed as a student project at Shih Hsin University. Completed on 5 February 2025, it addresses sport as a place of personal formation and of confrontation with rules and authority.
At the centre of the narrative is table tennis, followed through the story of a team training in an underground gym. The protagonists are Cheng Hao, a young player seeking his own path, and Yi Kai, his teammate and friend, driven by great enthusiasm. The two athletes' different personalities emerge especially when confronted with the coach's rigid, punitive methods, which will shape their future choices.
The story develops through training and competition preparation, showing how sport can be both an opportunity for growth and a source of conflict. Yi Kai's departure leads Cheng Hao to question his own path, until he makes a decision that changes how he lives the discipline and his life.
The film's central message concerns theimportance of consciously choosing one's own path, even when that means questioning established authority and making sacrifices. Through the table-tennis metaphor, it reflects on universal themes such as autonomy, resilience and friendship.
From a production standpoint, Unbound Spin is an independent student project made with a budget of TWD 80,000. Although shot in a university setting, it is a carefully made work that combines academic training and sports storytelling.
