Smokeys Dream – When Formula 1 Came to Town is a 60-minute sports documentary made in Sweden and directed by Christian Albinsson. It recounts a unique chapter in motorsport history: how a small southern Swedish village managed, against all odds, to bring Formula 1 to its circuit.

At the centre is the story of Sven “Smokey” Åsberg, a visionary and tireless promoter of the initiative. With determination and creativity, he transformed Anderstorp, a town in Småland, into an official round of the Formula 1 World Championship. From 1973 to 1978, the circuit hosted six memorable Grands Prix, becoming the scene of competitions that marked an era.

The documentary features figures connected to that historic season, including Birgitta Vinberg, Bo Runbjörk, Annika Sjöö, Ingemar Eriksson, Kjell Svensson, Kent Erlandsson, Jan Wärnelöv, Peter Sanell and former world champion Jackie Stewart, appearing as themselves. Black-and-white and colour archive footage, interviews and reconstructions alternate to convey the spirit of the era.

The film's message focuses on the power of vision and determination: a whole community, guided by one man's passion, overcame logistical, economic and bureaucratic obstacles to realise a dream considered impossible. Beyond sport, it explores entrepreneurship and social cohesion.

From a production standpoint, the documentary is neither a student project nor the director's first work. Its production budget was $70,000 and it was made entirely in Sweden. Its television premiere aired on public broadcaster SVT in August 2024, achieving viewing figures double the estimates and attracting considerable media interest.
