“MVP” is a Filipino short film that combines family drama and sporting themes to tell the coming-of-age story of a young athlete torn between outside expectations and personal desires. Directed and written by Getty Reyes, making his directorial debut, the film focuses on the world of competitive swimming, exploring the psychological pressures that can arise from sporting success.
The protagonist, Tiger Guzman, is a promising student and talented swimmer who has built his identity around victories in the pool. His relationship with his father, marked by high expectations and a constant quest for approval, gradually fractures as competition becomes a burden rather than a passion. After winning the title of MVP (Most Valuable Player), Tiger faces a crossroads: continue chasing the results others expect from him or listen to his creative calling, finding a new form of freedom through cinema.
With a teacher’s support, Tiger makes a short film that reflects his state of mind and the contradictions of success. The screening of his film coincides with the most important swimming final of his career, confronting him with a symbolic choice between seeking external recognition and discovering himself.
“MVP” addresses themes such as sporting pressure, personal growth and freedom of expression, offering a reflection on the authentic value of talent and the courage to follow one’s own path.
The film, starring Kobe Medalla, Floyd Tena, Ronald Alejo Guiriba and Rolando Inocencio, was produced in the Philippines with a budget of 8,500 dollars. It is not a student project but an independent work marking Getty Reyes’s first official film as a director. Completed on 22 November 2024, the short film was shot digitally in 16:9 colour, in English and Tagalog.
